How to Plan a Proposal in Uvita and Dominical, Costa Rica
Uvita and Dominical suit a proposal that is private and unhurried. Most of the planning comes down to four decisions: the setting, how private you want it, the time of day and what happens if it rains.
About this guide. This is planning advice from our team, combined with general information about the area. It is not a record of past events. Weather notes describe the usual pattern, not a forecast.
Start with the setting
Before colors or flowers, decide where you will be standing. On this coast the choice usually comes down to four kinds of place.
- The terrace or pool deck of a villa. Many rentals in the hills above Uvita, Dominical and Ojochal have a terrace with a wide view. You control who is there and when.
- A garden. Ground-level and green, with room to walk into the moment rather than open a door onto it.
- Indoors. A living room or bedroom is completely private and does not depend on the weather.
- A dinner. A restaurant table can work if you are comfortable with other people nearby. You will need the restaurant on your side.
If you have not booked your stay yet, this is the moment to think about it. A place with a private covered terrace gives you the most options.
Decide how private you want it
Some people want the moment witnessed. Others would rather it belonged to two people only. Be honest about which one your partner is.
Privacy is also practical. A setup takes time to build, and it is much easier to keep secret in a space that only you and your host can enter. A private space lets you choose the exact minute, too, without waiting for other people to move along.
Time it around the light and the weather
The Costa Ballena faces west, so the sun goes down over the Pacific. In Uvita, sunset falls between about 5:10 and 6:00 p.m. depending on the month. Darkness follows fast this close to the equator, so the golden light you see in photos lasts for a short window. Plan to arrive at the setup well before sunset, not at it.
Then there is rain. On Costa Rica's Pacific side the rainy season usually runs from May to October, with November as a transition month, and the dry season from December to March. During the rainy months, showers come mostly in the afternoon and early evening, which is exactly when most people picture proposing.
That does not rule out those months. It means a morning or midday moment is worth considering, and that for a late-afternoon plan it helps to know whether your stay has a covered space you could use instead.

Check the practical details of your stay
If you are staying in a hillside rental, find out what the access road is like. Some properties are reached by steep, unpaved drives, and anyone bringing equipment needs to know that in advance. Parking and the walk from the car to the space you have in mind are worth knowing too.
Keep it a secret
Most surprises are given away by small things. A few habits help.
- Use an email address or number your partner does not see. Ask everyone involved to contact only you.
- Give the day an ordinary reason to exist: a tour in the morning, a dinner reservation in the evening.
- Agree on a setup window while the two of you are away from the property, with some margin in case you get back early.
- Decide in advance how you will get the ring there without it being found in your luggage.
- Have a simple line ready for dressing up. "I booked us a nice dinner" covers most of it.
Plan the decoration
Decoration should suit the person and the place. Start with what your partner likes: favorite colors, flowers or no flowers, something grand or something quiet.
Then think about the space. A terrace open to the breeze needs a different approach from an enclosed room. Send whoever is designing it a photo of the space, even one from the rental listing. A reference picture of a style you like is useful as well, as a starting point for the conversation.
What to tell a setup provider
The more of this you can share in your first message, the faster you get a useful answer:
- The date, or the range of dates you are choosing between.
- The name of your accommodation, or a map pin.
- The space you have in mind, with a photo if possible.
- Whether that space is indoors, covered or open.
- When you expect to be away from the property.
- Colors and style, and anything your partner would love or dislike.
When to start planning
Start as soon as your travel dates and accommodation are booked. That leaves time to settle the timing and adjust if your itinerary changes.
If you are already traveling and the idea has only just arrived, it is still worth asking. The honest answer may be yes with a simpler setup.
Have a backup for outdoor ideas
If your plan is outdoors, look for its covered twin at the same property before the day: a roofed part of the terrace, or the living room with the doors open to the view. Not every property has one, and not every setup can move, so raise it early with whoever is doing the setup and agree on who decides and by what time.
What a proposal setup service can help with
A setup service takes the physical work off your hands: designing the decoration, bringing it and building it on site. Ask at the start whether taking it down afterward is part of the service, because that varies with the setup.
It does not replace your part. The words, the ring and knowing your partner are yours.
